The Arctic Division of the world's largest general scientific society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), meets in Dillingham, Wednesday through Saturday, September 21-24, 2011.

The "Save Our Salmon" initiative comes up for a vote on the October 4 Lake and Peninsula ballot. This article provides an overview of the initiative as well as money spent on the issue. Read the entire article in the Anchorage Daily News.

"Anglo American in thick of great Alaskan Pebble mine debate" (September 16, 2011 - Mining Weekly)
Miningweekly.com details the Pebble mine debate, with comments from both sides, and presents examples from recent media. Author Martin Creamer includes economic, environmental, and historic factors that have been raised during the debate over whether the mine should be developed. "Wash senator intends to oppose proposed Pebble Mine if it would harm fish; asks EPA to block" (September 12, 2011 - Washington Post)
Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Washington) has written a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in support of the agency using its authority under the Clean Water Act to restrict or prohibit large-scale development around Bristol Bay. Hundreds of Cantwell's constituents are commercial fishermen. Washington-based seafood processors also have a dominant presence in Bristol Bay. Read the entire article in the Washington Post.

BBNC mailing urges shareholders' vote

In advance of the "Save Our Salmon" vote taking place this October in the Lake and Peninsula Borough, BBNC announced today in a news release that it has sent letters to more than 800 shareholders in the borough, urging them to participate. The letters urge shareholders to "make your voices heard on this important issue." BBNC also sent a letter to shareholders elsewhere in Alaska.
